Abstract

Advances in imaging technologies have increased the accuracy of the diagnostic process and placed radiologists in a central position in the treatment of patients. Despite this central position, policy-makers, health managers, health professionals, patients, and other people in society are not sufficiently informed and aware of the roles and responsibilities of radiologists in the treatment process. This research aims to determine the perceptions of patients receiving imaging services regarding the roles and responsibilities of radiologists. The research was designed as a descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative field study. The population of the research consisted of patients receiving imaging services from hospitals in the city center of Uşak. A total of 569 patients participated voluntarily in the study using a convenience sampling method. The data obtained were analyzed using frequency analysis using SPSS. Of the participants who identified radiologists, 45.2% stated that they were physicians, and 46.7% were medical school graduates. 32.5% believed that radiologists interpreted and reported the images. 26.4% of participants believed that radiologists played a role in their treatment, and 37.3% of participants who believed they did said that radiologists interpreted and reported the images. Conversely, 54.8% of participants stated that radiologists were physicians, 53.3% were medical school graduates, 67.5% said that radiologists interpreted and reported the images, and 73.6% said they had no role in their treatment or were unaware of it. Research findings reveal that the role and responsibilities of radiologists, as well as their contributions to treatment processes, are not sufficiently understood by society. To improve this situation, public awareness campaigns and strengthening of health communication strategies are recommended.

Katılımcıların %32,5’i radyologların görüntüleri yorumladıklarını ve raporladıklarını düşünmektedir.
