Abstract

Nicotine dependence is a major public health issue and one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. In addition to its health effects, it imposes a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nicotine dependence and psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, and stress among individuals attending a smoking cessation clinic. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Smoking Cessation Clinic of XXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXXX, including 622 participants. Nicotine dependence was assessed using the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), and psychological status was evaluated with the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0, and Pearson correlation analyses were performed. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Of the participants, 308 were women and 314 men, with a mean age of 42.96 ± 13.31 years. The mean BMI was 26.1 ± 4.5 kg/m², mean Fagerström score 6.7 ± 2.7, and mean pack-year value 27.3 ± 19.1. Mean DASS-21 scores were 4.9 ± 4.1 for depression, 5.4 ± 3.8 for anxiety, and 6.0 ± 4.0 for stress. FNBT scores correlated positively with all DASS-21 subscales, while pack-year value was significantly associated only with anxiety (p<0.05). Nicotine dependence is a complex condition with both physical and psychological dimensions. The strong association between mental status, particularly anxiety, and nicotine dependence underscores the importance of routinely assessing psychological well-being in cessation programs. Integrating psychosocial support with pharmacotherapy may improve cessation success.
