Abstract
The aim of this study is to systematically review the existing literature on the physical activity levels of university students and to examine their relationship with demographic variables such as gender, age, and department/faculty. This research is a systematic review conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. The reviewed studies include Turkish and English articles, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations published between April 2020 and July 2025. Using the keywords “physical activity,” “university students,” “exercise habits,” and “systematic review,” searches were carried out in Google Scholar, DergiPark, the National Thesis Center, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. A total of 1,975 records were screened, and 21 studies (11 articles, 8 master’s theses, and 2 doctoral dissertations) that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Among the 1,975 studies examined, 52% reported moderate physical activity levels, 33% reported low levels, and 14% reported high levels among university students. The most frequently reported determinants were gender (100%), age (38%), and department (57%). The findings indicate that university students generally have low physical activity levels, demographic factors play a significant role in determining these levels, and students with higher physical activity levels tend to have better quality of life and mental well-being. However, the existing literature is limited in terms of sample diversity and the consideration of psychosocial variables. Therefore, future research should include larger and more diverse samples, employ standardized measurement tools, and design physical activity promotion programs tailored to demographic characteristics.
Araştırma sistematik alan yazın incelemesi doğrultusunda PRISMA 2020 (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses)yönergeleri takip edilerek gerçekleştirilmiştir.
