Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of change of direction (COD) training on sprint, agility and balance performance of young padel players. It was hypothesized that COD training would improve sprint, agility and balance performance parameters in young padel players. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 young male padel players were randomly divided into two groups: Experimental group (n=15), which received COD training in addition to padel training, and control group (n=15), which continued padel training only. All participants completed a 1-week familiarization period prior to the intervention. Both groups participated in padel training five days a week, while the experimental group additionally practiced COD training three days a week. The performance parameters of the athletes were evaluated by 10-meter sprint test, 505 agility test, Arrowhead agility test and Y-Balance test. Results: The results revealed that the experimental group showed significant improvement in the 10-meter sprint test (p = 0.05, ES = 0.67). In addition, significant time effects were found in the 505-agility test (p < 0.05, ES = 0.47) and significant improvements in the Arrowhead agility test (p < 0.05, ES = 0.29). In the Y-Balance test, significant improvements were observed in the anterior, posteromedial and posterolateral directions in the experimental group (p < 0.05; ES = 0.91, 0.35, 0.26). Similar improvements were observed in the control group, but the effect sizes were smaller. The difference between the groups was significant in agility tests (p<0.05), but not in 10-meter sprint and balance tests. Conclusions: An eight-week COD-focused training program significantly improved speed, agility and dynamic balance performance in young athletes. The training protocol supported performance improvement by increasing neuromuscular control and postural stability. The findings suggest that COD-based training is an effective method to improve the motoric skills of young athletes.
