Abstract
The act of sitting has shown historical continuity as a fundamental requirement in human daily life, taking different forms in line with social, cultural, and spatial transformations. The spatial and material counterparts of the act of sitting in Turkish society have undergone significant changes with the transition from nomadic life to settled life. The act of sitting, which was accommodated with woven cushions within the flexible and multifunctional interior design of the traditional Turkish tent, took shape within the Turkish home through fixed seating elements such as the divan with the transition to settled life. The modernization movements that began in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century were decisive in the formal and spatial transformation of seating furniture. With the advent of the Republic, residential spaces and seating furniture were reshaped in line with modernization goals; after the 1950s, industrialization, apartment living, and mass production processes led to traditional seating elements being replaced by modern seating furniture. Modular and multifunctional furniture became widespread from the 1970s onwards; technological developments and global design concepts after the 1990s influenced the production and usage patterns of seating furniture. This study examines the transformation of Turkish seating furniture within its historical process using a literature review, historical-chronological analysis, and a qualitative analysis method based on the relationship between space and furniture. The formation of seating furniture is evaluated in the context of social change and residential space, revealing the dynamics of cultural continuity and transformation.
