Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effects of different growing media and grafting on vegetative growth and root architecture of tomato plants. In the study, the performances of both grafted [Diva F1/Jasmine F1] and non-grafted (Jasmine F1) tomato plants were compared using five different root growing media (100% peat, 100% perlite, 100% sand, 75% peat + 25% perlite and 50% peat + 50% perlite). The performances of the plants were evaluated in terms of plant height, stem diameter, stem-leaf and root dry weights as well as root architecture characteristics such as root length, diameter, surface area and volume. The findings obtained from the study showed that growing media and grafting status had significant effects on growth and root parameters. The highest vegetative growth and root architecture values were generally obtained in grafted seedlings and in media with high peat content. Grafted tomato plants, especially those grown in 100% peat medium, showed superiority in terms of plant height, stem diameter and dry matter accumulation. The results show that grafted plants with strong root systems and suitable growing environments can increase growth performance in grafted tomato plants.
