Abstract
This study was conducted with 310 adolescents %) enrolled in a public high school in Istanbul, Türkiye (95 females, 30.6%; 215 males, 69.4; age range 13 - 17 years, M = 15.32). The aim of the study is to examine the relationships between fear of positive evaluation, hope, and career anxiety in adolesences. Data were collected using the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale, the Career Anxiety Scale for High School Students, and the Children’s Hope Scale; demographic information was obtained through a Personal Information Form. Pearson correlation analyses indicated that fear of positive evaluation was positively associated with career anxiety (r = .29, p < .01), negatively associated with hope (r = –.25, p < .01), and that hope was negatively associated with career anxiety (r = –.32, p < .01). Regression analyses showed that fear of positive evaluation significantly predicted career anxiety (β = .29, p < .001) and hope (β = –.25, p < .001), while hope significantly predicted career anxiety (β = –.32, p < .001). Mediation analysis was conducted using regression-based bootstrapping with 10,000 samples (PROCESS Macro, Model 4). Results revealed a significant indirect effect of fear of positive evaluation on career anxiety through hope (bootstrap coefficient = .125, 95% CI [.05, .22]), supporting a partial mediation model [F(2, 307) = 26.762, p < .001, R² = .15]. Overall, findings suggest that fear of positive evaluation increases career anxiety among adolescents; however, hope serves as a protective factor by partially mediating this relationship. These results are discussed in comparison of existing literature, and implications for psychological support programs targeting adolescents are presented.
