Abstract

Ontological well-being is defined as a holistic life project constructed by an individual in line with their life purpose. Seen as the closest structure defining the meaning and purpose of life, this project includes individuals' emotional and cognitive evaluations of their completed, ongoing, and potential lives. It is known that childhood experiences are a significant factor in this evaluation process. Based on the assumption that positive childhood experiences could be a meaningful explainer of ontological well-being, this research aimed to investigate whether they significantly predict ontological well-being and its temporal dimensions (past, present, and future). The study group consisted of 438 (326 women; 112 men) adult individuals. A Personal Information Form, the Positive Childhood Experiences Scale, and the Ontological Well-being Scale were used to collect data. Correlation analyses revealed statistically significant positive relationships between ontological well-being and positive childhood experiences. Simple linear regression analyses showed that positive childhood experiences were a significant predictor of the total ontological well-being score and its sub-dimensions (past, present, and future). The obtained findings were discussed in detail in line with the current literature, and various recommendations were presented for future research.
