Abstract
This study aimed to compare the market weights of lambs raised under extensive and semi-wild production systems in Gökçeada sheep and to evaluate these systems in terms of sustainable sheep production. The material of the study consisted of a total of 457 lambs raised in eight different farms located on Gökçeada Island. Birth weight and 120-day live weight were recorded for 70 lambs raised under the extensive system, whereas 120-day live weight was evaluated for 387 lambs raised under the semi-wild system. The mean market weight at 120 days was determined as 25.17 kg for lambs raised under the extensive system and 18.91 kg for those raised under the semi-wild system. The effects of production system, farm, and sex on market weight were found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). In addition, the wider distribution of weights observed in the semi-wild system indicated greater individual variability within this system. In conclusion, while the extensive system was found to be more advantageous in terms of growth performance, the semi-wild system, characterized by low input requirements, reliance on natural resources, and environmental adaptability, can be considered an important alternative production model for sustainable sheep production. The mean market weight at 120 days was determined as 25.17 kg for lambs raised under the extensive system and 18.91 kg for those raised under the semi-wild system.
