Abstract
Istanbul is at risk of earthquakes due to its high population, old building stock and proximity to active fault lines in the coastal areas of the Marmara Sea. This study aims to geographically map the risk levels by comprehensively analyzing the physical, spatial and socio-economic factors affecting earthquake risks. A total of 21 districts on the European and Anatolian sides were evaluated based on multidimensional criteria such as suitability for settlement, soil characteristics, building condition, demographic indicators and earthquake scenarios. The data were analyzed using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and it was determined that risk factors are concentrated in the districts bordering the Marmara Sea. Especially in districts such as Avcılar, Küçükçekmece, Zeytinburnu and Fatih on the European Side, physical factors such as old building stock, soil liquefaction and inadequate infrastructure play an important role in increasing the risk. Risks on the Anatolian side, on the other hand, exhibit a more heterogeneous distribution. The findings show that precautions should be taken especially in the regions bordering the Marmara Sea, and suggest that these approaches can serve as a guide for other metropolitan areas under similar risk.
