Abstract

Space is inscribed in memory through experiences and memories, and the human relationship with space is most fundamentally realized within the home. The home becomes an emotional memory space by establishing a strong connection with an individual’s memories, emotions, and identity. This study examines the interaction between space and memory, focusing on the emotional significance of the home in human life. It aims to explore how experiences and memories associated with individuals’ childhood homes are retained in memory and how these experiences shape their conceptualizations of an ideal home. The research is structured by integrating a phenomenological approach with a narrative design. In this context, participants with shared characteristics were identified, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore their experiences, memories, and emotions related to the homes in which they grew up. Open-ended questions elicited emotional associations, while participants’ sketches enabled the visual expression of memory. The collected data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis, and the role of the home in the formation of individual memory and emotional experience was examined. The findings reveal that individuals’ emotional attachment to space, together with past memories, significantly shapes their perception of an ideal home.
