Abstract

This study examines the effects of color and light usage on spatial perception and religious identity in worship spaces belonging to different Christian denominations. Within the scope of the research, the Ayia Triada Greek Orthodox Church, Saint Anthony Catholic Church, and the German Protestant Church (Kreuzkirche), located in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, were selected as case studies. The research question investigates in what ways the use of color and light in these three denominational contexts differentiates spatial perception and identity. The hypothesis proposes that each denomination interprets these elements uniquely according to its theological and cultural framework, and that this directly influences church identity. As a method, literature review, document analysis, and visual analysis based on photographs and on-site observations were employed. The originality of the study lies in the comparative analysis of worship spaces belonging to different denominations within the same urban context, revealing the impact of denominational differences on architectural aesthetics. The findings reveal that color and light play a determining role not only in aesthetic expression but also in the formation of spatial perception and spatial identity. The study contributes to designers and researchers in developing spatial identity–oriented approaches.
