Abstract

This study aims to examine the effects of the artificial intelligence course on students, students’ perceptions of artificial intelligence, and the contributions of these technologies to educational processes. The research was designed according to the phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research methods, and data were collected through an interview form with 10 students taking the artificial intelligence course. The data obtained were subjected to hierarchical thematic content analysis using the MAXQDA program. It was determined that, prior to the course, participants generally perceived artificial intelligence in a narrow sense and had a framework limited to programming or popular tools. After the course, it was found that students recorded significant improvements in technical skills such as algorithm development, model training, data preprocessing, and result interpretation. In addition, artificial intelligence education was observed to positively support students’ higher-order cognitive skills, such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, critical thinking, conducting research, and teamwork. Participants stated that they particularly experienced difficulties in the coding process regarding mathematical background, translating theory into practice, and at the initial stage. Nevertheless, they expressed positive opinions that artificial intelligence will provide significant contributions to professional practices such as data analysis, automation, robotic systems, R&D, and production line optimization, especially in technical fields like mechatronics. Findings related to data security and ethical issues reveal that students developed considerable awareness on these topics, but they think that current practices do not sufficiently emphasize data security risks. Participants highlighted the critical importance of responsible behavior and data privacy in artificial intelligence applications. It is emphasized that artificial intelligence education is an effective tool for developing students’ technical competencies and cognitive skills; however, educational programs should be structured to include not only technical content but also modules on ethics, data security, and responsible use. It is recommended that higher education institutions adopt a holistic educational approach that supports artificial intelligence literacy and strengthens students’ critical thinking and digital ethics awareness.
