Abstract
This study aims to examine the historical origins, settlement processes, and sociological structures of the Arab communities living in the provinces of Gaziantep and Kilis up to the present day. Due to its geographical location, the Gaziantep-Kilis basin constitutes a transitional zone between Anatolia and Bilâd al-Shâm, and throughout history it has served as a settlement area for various ethnic and tribal groups. Particularly during the Ottoman period, the administrative, economic, and cultural ties established with the province of Aleppo transformed the region into an important center for the settlement of Arab tribes. In this research, taking into account the historical geography of the region, the origins, migration routes, and settlement strategies of the Arab tribes inhabiting the Gaziantep and Kilis area have been examined. Within this framework, the historical developments of tribes such as Elbu Şaban, Beni Said, Ceys, Naim, Muvali, Tay and Damalha have been analyzed through a combination of archival sources-including Ottoman tahrir registers, population records, sharia court registers, and provincial yearbooks-as well as impressions obtained from oral history data collected during field research. In addition, the demographic distribution of the Arab population in the region, intertribal relations, the social networks established with Turkmen and Kurdish communities, and tribal confederations have been addressed from the perspective of historical sociology. The study demonstrates that the Arab presence in the Gaziantep and Kilis region cannot be explained solely by recent migrations. Rather, it is the result of long-term historical processes connected with Bilâd al-Shâm and the Jazira region. Ottoman settlement policies, tribal mobility, and border security strategies played a decisive role in shaping this process. In the Republican period, however, the consolidation of borders, the transition to a sedentary lifestyle, and modernization processes accelerated the transformation of tribal structures. Based on field research and archival studies conducted since 2018, this study seeks to present the historical development of Arab communities in Gaziantep and Kilis and to contribute new data to the literature on the historical and sociological structure of the Arab population in Turkey.
