Abstract
This study examines the political events that took place in Elazığ prior to the military coup of September 12, 1980, in light of local press sources (the newspapers Turan, Uluova, Nurhak, and Elazığ). The ideological polarization, economic problems, and security vulnerabilities that deepened throughout Turkey during the second half of the 1970s directly affected political and social life in Elazığ. As one of the Eastern Anatolian cities where different cultural and political identities coexisted, Elazığ exhibited a social character marked by a pronounced nationalist and conservative tendency. The general elections of 1973 and 1977 revealed the multi-actor nature of political competition in the province; the struggle among the CHP, AP, MHP, and MSP was documented through the local press. In 1978, political violence intensified in Elazığ, with murders, bomb attacks, armed clashes, and actions targeting educational institutions causing serious damage to social peace. Martial law, declared on December 26, 1978, proved insufficient to bring the violence under control; security operations intensified in 1979 and 1980, associational activities were restricted, and state surveillance over the public sphere expanded. Nevertheless, bomb attacks and armed clashes continued. The military coup of September 12, 1980, emerged as a coercive culmination of this process: a curfew was declared in Elazığ, the activities of political parties were suspended, mayors were removed from office, and public order was placed entirely under military control. In the post-coup operations, hundreds of people were detained and severe sentences were handed down by military courts. This study demonstrates that the period leading up to September 12, 1980, constituted a multidimensional social trauma with concrete and devastating effects in provincial cities such as Elazığ.
