Abstract

This article explores the thematic elements embedded in the folk songs (türkü) of the Harput and Elazığ region through the lens of collective memory. Harput folk songs are regarded not merely as musical artifacts but as cultural narratives that embody the community’s memory, identity, and emotional world. In this regard, the study seeks to build an interdisciplinary bridge between musicology and folklore by introducing a narrative-based and thematic perspective to the field of folk music research. All 83 Harput folk songs included in the TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) repertoire were analyzed using thematic analysis. Musical notation examples were limited tu a small number of representative pieces to supprt the themes. The analysis focuses on the prominent themes of love, separation, heroism, and lament, discussing how these motifs reflect the collective memory of the local community. The findings suggest that Harput folk songs function as cultural texts that convey social memory beyond individual emotion. Accordingly, this article aims to contribute a meaning- and theme-centered interpretation to the Harput musical tradition, rendering visible the layers of cultural memory embedded within these songs.
