Abstract

This study compares classical edge detection operators (Roberts, Sobel, Laplacian, and Canny) with optimization-based approaches (GA, PSO, ACO, GSA, IGSA, and GoldSAII). Evaluations were conducted on clean images, Gaussian-noise-corrupted images, and low-contrast thermal images. Performance was assessed using Accuracy, Precision, Recall, Specificity, F1-Score, and ELCD for structural edge continuity in thermal data. The results indicate that classical methods provide a clear computational speed advantage, but their F1-Score degrades more noticeably under noise. In contrast, optimization-based methods exhibit more stable behavior in noisy and low-contrast conditions. Within the tested setup, GoldSAII and IGSA achieved the most consistent outcomes in terms of F1-Score and ELCD. In addition, GA and PSO produced similar edge maps, while GA required considerably less computation time. Overall, classical operators remain suitable for strict real-time constraints, whereas optimization-based methods are more appropriate when structural continuity and robustness are prioritized.
