Abstract

In recent years, climate change and increasing environmental pressures have driven a sharp rise in both the frequency of natural disasters and the scale of destruction they cause, making it necessary to monitor changes on the Earth’s surface rapidly, reliably, and over large geographic areas. Conventional Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing approaches face serious limitations in processing time and computational resources when handling large-scale datasets. To overcome these constraints, this study utilizes the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, known for its cloud-based architecture and big data handling capabilities. Three major natural disasters in Türkiye were analyzed using GEE and JavaScript: the 24 January 2020 Elazığ Earthquake (Mw 6.5), the 11 August 2021 Kastamonu–Bozkurt Flood, and the 28 July 2021 Antalya–Manavgat Forest Fire, using Sentinel-1 SAR, Sentinel-2 MSI, and Landsat 8 OLI imagery. Vegetation and water-related indices, including NDVI, NDWI, and dNBR, along with change detection techniques, were applied to assess environmental impacts. Results show that approximately 43,460 hectares of forest were burned in the Manavgat fire, residential areas up to 400 meters wide were inundated during the Kastamonu flood, and surface deformations and structural damage after the Elazığ earthquake were mapped through radar signal disruptions.
