Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine how migrant characters are constructed as the other in migration- themed picturebooks for children. The study sample consists of 22 migration-themed picturebooks published in Türkiye between 2012 and 2024 and addressed to early childhood readers aged 3–8. The findings reveal that the causes of migration are predominantly grounded in forced circumstances such as war, environmental destruction, and natural disasters; in some texts, however, the reasons for migration are left unspecified, shifting the focus toward the emotional dimensions of the migration experience. In the books examined, the other is represented through elements such as physical appearance, cultural differences, language barriers, and experiences of rights deprivation, indicating that otherness is constructed not merely as “difference” but as a social position that produces inequality. At the same time, the depiction of emotions such as fear, sadness, loneliness, hope, and happiness through both verbal narration and visual representation supports the development of empathy in child readers. Finally, the presentation of the other’s position within social relationships—ranging from exclusion to acceptance— demonstrates that otherness is not a fixed identity but a relational position that is produced through interaction and, in some narratives, rendered transformable.
