Abstract

Following its foundation by Khan Asparuh (681–702), the Danube Bulgarian State emerged as a regional power under Khan Tervel (702–718). It became a determining factor even in the politics of the Eastern Roman Empire. The silence of the sources after the reign of Tervel prevents a clear understanding of a certain period in Bulgarian history. At this point, the Bulgarian Khans List provides a broader perspective on the developments of the period. The interval between the reigns of Tervel and Kardam (718–777) is generally described as a period of political crisis for the Bulgarians due to the lack of information. Although the death of Khan Sevar (724–739) in 739 led to a dynastic change within the Danube Bulgarian State during this source-silent period, the long reign of Khan Kormisosh (739–756), except the year 756, is significant in demonstrating that the political crisis had not yet begun. However, the process following Kormisosh's defeat by Constantine V (741–775) before the fortress of Markellai in 756 indicates that the political crisis of the Danube Bulgarian State began that year. Based on contemporary sources and the Bulgarian Khans List, this study examines the causes of the political crisis in the Danube Bulgarian State, its policy toward the Slavs, its relations with the Eastern Roman Empire, and the timing of the crisis's onset.

Bununla birlikte Kormiş’in 756 yılında Markellai Kalesi önünde V. Konstantinos’a (741–775) yenilmesinin ardından yaşanan süreç, Tuna Bulgar Devleti’ndeki siyasi krizin o yıl başladığına işaret etmektedir. Bu çalışma, çağdaş kaynaklar ve Bulgar Hanları Listesi temelinde Tuna Bulgar Devleti’ndeki siyasi krizin nedenlerini, Slavlara yönelik politikasını, Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu ile ilişkilerini ve krizin başlangıç zamanını incelemektedir.
