Abstract

This study investigates the sectoral comparative advantage structures of Turkey and Algeria over the period 2004–2022, employing the Balassa Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) Index as an empirical tool. The primary objective is to identify the product groups in which each country exhibits competitive advantages or disadvantages, to trace the temporal evolution of these advantages, and to analyze how structural shifts in export composition influence their trade strategies, sectoral specialization, and bilateral cooperation potential. By juxtaposing Turkey’s diversified manufacturing base and medium-to-high technology orientation with Algeria’s energy- and resource-dependent export profile, the analysis uncovers significant complementarities between the two economies. These complementarities provide a solid foundation for designing mutually beneficial trade policies and enhancing economic integration. Findings indicate that Turkey has progressively strengthened its manufacturing-based competitiveness, whereas Algeria’s export structure remains heavily concentrated in hydrocarbons, signaling the need for diversification toward non-energy sectors. The study, therefore, highlights potential avenues of cooperation particularly in non-energy industries, intermediate goods production, and technology transfer that could foster sustainable and balanced trade relations between the two nations. In doing so, the research contributes not only to the empirical literature on revealed comparative advantage but also to policy debates on regional trade integration and industrial upgrading in emerging economies.

Elde edilen bulgular, Türkiye’nin imalat sanayiine dayalı rekabet avantajını artırdığı, Cezayir’in ise enerji sektörüne bağımlı ihracat yapısında çeşitlenme ihtiyacı bulunduğunu göstermektedir. Bu çerçevede, çalışma iki ülke arasındaki sektörel iş birliği alanlarını, özellikle enerji-dışı sanayi, ara malı üretimi ve teknoloji transferi bağlamında değerlendirmekte; mikro düzeyde sektörel rekabet gücü, makro düzeyde ise ekonomik entegrasyon perspektifinden bütüncül bir analiz sunmaktadır.
