Abstract

In recent years, increasing globalization and international migration have led to cultural and linguistic diversity being recognized as one of the defining sociocultural dynamics of contemporary societies. The growing cultural diversity on a global scale has prompted discussions not only about cognitive gains but also about value-based learning objectives within education systems. At the primary school level, textbooks play a key role in shaping children’s perceptions of the social world, as they influence how values, cultural differences, and social relations are represented. This study aims to reveal how a fourth-grade elementary school French textbook as a native language, used in multicultural and multilingual educational contexts, is represented through a qualitative content analysis approach from the perspectives of multiculturalism and values education. The theoretical framework draws on Banks’ transformative approach to multicultural education, Nieto’s emphasis on equity and inclusion, and Schwartz’s theory of basic human values. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study employs qualitative content analysis to analyse nine narrative texts included in the textbook. The analysis is conducted across seven thematic categories: cultural representation and diversity, equality and inclusion, language use and multilingualism, identity and belonging, values education, cultural diversity in visuals, and critical thinking. Each text is coded according to the degree to which these themes are represented. The findings indicate that values education constitutes a strong dimension of the textbook, with frequent emphasis on empathy, solidarity, responsibility, and justice. Identity and belonging, as well as critical thinking, are also supported through narratives that encourage reflection on characters’ experiences. However, the results reveal limitations in terms of cultural and linguistic diversity. Cultural differences are mostly presented indirectly, while explicit references to diverse cultural groups and multilingual practices remain limited. Overall, the study highlights the need for more inclusive and representative textbook design to better support multicultural and multilingual awareness in primary education.
