Abstract

This study analyzes the philosophical, historical and pedagogical foundations of character education and explores how a virtue-based educational approach can be structered within contemporary education systems. In particular, the Aristotelian conception of character rooted in virtue ethics is examined in relation to modern character education models and this relationship is evaluated within the context of educational philosophy. The main research question centers on how an educational approach based not merely on behavior but on internalized values and virtues can holistically support character development. In this context, the virtue theories of Ancient Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle are discussed alongside modern approaches, including Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, social-emotional learning models and values education. Within the Turkish context, the role of character and virtue-based education in national education policies is analyzed through the example of the Türkiye Yüzyılı Maarif Modeli (Century of Türkiye Education Model). The findings emphasize that character education is not limited to cognitive or behavioral development but is a comprehensive process encompassing moral, emotional and social growth. To raise ethically aware ad virtous individuals, there is a need for a long-term educational reform grounded in philosophical principles, prioritizing teacher quality, transforming school culture and involving all stakeholders in society.
