Abstract
Authority constitutes a fundamental element in the maintenance of social structures; however, the ways in which it is positioned within pedagogical contexts remain a significant area of debate. In instrumental music education, authority may be structured both as a pedagogical guiding mechanism and as a hierarchical mechanism that produces domination. This becomes particularly evident in piano education, which is based on one-to-one interaction and requires strict discipline, where pedagogical processes extend beyond the transmission of technical skills and transform into a field in which social power relations are reproduced. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of symbolic violence, habitus, and cultural capital, this study critically and reflexively analyzes power relations in piano education. The findings suggest that pedagogical practices in piano education are not limited to the acquisition of technical competence, but rather shape students’ musical identities through cultural norms and legitimized authority relations. In this context, symbolic violence emerges in piano education as a subtle form of domination that operates not through direct coercion but through normative assumptions. The evaluation of students based on criteria such as achievement, competence, and interpretation reveals the reproduction of unequal power relations within pedagogical processes. This study argues that piano education is not merely a technical instructional process but also a field in which social power relations are produced and legitimized; therefore, it should be reconsidered through a critical-reflexive perspective.
