Abstract

In urban regeneration projects, especially in structural systems with dense reinforcement, there is a need for concrete with high flowability, self-compacting capability without vibration, and the ability to ensure homogeneous placement. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) stands out as an innovative concrete type that meets these requirements. However, the effect of maximum aggregate size (Dmax) on the fresh and hardened properties of SCC has not been comprehensively investigated within the specific context of urban regeneration structures. In this study, two different SCC series (Dmax=22 mm and Dmax=8 mm), in which only the maximum aggregate size was varied while all other mix parameters were kept constant, were produced. Fresh concrete performance was evaluated through slump-flow diameter, T500 time, V-funnel, L-box, and U-box tests. In order to determine hardened concrete properties, compressive strength tests were conducted at 7 and 28 days. The results indicated that an increase in maximum aggregate size improves the flowability and compressive strength of the concrete, while negatively affecting its passing ability. It was determined that smaller aggregate sizes provide better performance in passing through narrow reinforcement spacing. These findings reveal that the performance of self-compacting concrete depends on a balance between flowability and passing ability. As a result, it was concluded that the selection of maximum aggregate size should not be based on a single performance criterion, but rather on a multi-parameter approach considering the application conditions. The study provides important engineering insights for the performance-based optimization of SCC mixtures to be used in urban regeneration projects.
