Abstract
The evolution of Turkish music theory, systematized by Safiyuddin Urmevi in the 13th century, has formed the theoretical foundations of contemporary music. Different theoretical approaches and definitions of makam (mode) have emerged around these foundations. However, by the 20th century, the Arel system established a standardized understanding of Turkish music theory. The Arel approach, which replaced the traditional practice of meşk (musical apprenticeship) within the historical depth of music and is relatively related to it, has made the analysis of our music visible. In this context, analyzing the performance and composition of Turkish musical makams through the Arel system is of great importance for understanding contemporary makam concepts. This research focuses on a musical analysis of the Hicazkâr saz semaisi, composed by Kemal Niyazi Seyhun and performed on violin by 20th-century Turkish music composer and violinist Cevdet Çağla. This study, prepared using a descriptive research method, analyzes a YouTube audio recording of Mesud Cemil Bey and Cevdet Bey performing the Hicazkâr saz semai composed by Kemal Niyazi Seyhun in the 1910s. The techniques used by Çağla in her performance demonstrate her compatibility with the 20th-century understanding of makam performance, revealing how she combines the traditional structure of Turkish music with a modern makam interpretation, and highlighting the originality of her performance.
