Abstract
This study examines passive verbs and their syntactic counterparts, pro-agents, within the context of Surah Yusuf, aiming to enhance the conceptual grasp of these linguistic structures. The research initially analyzes the methodology required to transform past (madi) and present (mudari) verbs into the passive voice. Subsequently, it focuses on the pro-agent, which replaces the subject (fa’il) in passive constructions, and its grammatical inflection (i‘rab). Following this theoretical framework, the study identifies all passive verbs and pro-agents within Surah Yusuf, provides their grammatical analysis, and explores the semantic motivations behind the preference for the passive form in these verses. The findings reveal sixteen instances of passive verbs in the Surah; accounting for repetitions, fourteen unique passive forms are utilized. It was observed that in the majority of these instances, the pro-agent appears as a hidden pronoun (mustatir), while in rare cases, it manifests as an attached pronoun (muttasil) or an explicit noun (zahir). Semantic analysis indicates that in ten instances, the agent is omitted because it is already known, whereas in two cases, the passive form is used due to the agent's actual anonymity. Furthermore, in two specific instances involving Prophet Yusuf, although the actual agent is Allah, the passive structure is employed as a pedagogical strategy and a subtle step toward constructing monotheistic consciousness (tawhid) in a manner appropriate for the audience’s level of faith. Ultimately, the choice of passive structures in the Surah aligns perfectly with the Qur’anic principles of eloquence (balaghah) and conciseness (ijaz), reinforcing contextual depth by streamlining the narrative.
Sûrede toplam on altı kez meçhul fiil formunun yer aldığı, bunlardan iki tanesi tekrar edildiği için toplamda on dört farklı meçhul fiilin kullanılmış olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
