Abstract
Throughout the history of Arabic literature, many prose works characterized by the use of rhetorical and literary devices have been read with great appreciation. Among prose genres, travelogues occupy a significant place. One of the authors of such works is the exegete Abū al-Thanāʾ Shihāb al-Dīn Maḥmūd al-Ālūsī. In two travelogues composed during his journey from Baghdad to Istanbul in 1851 and his return from Istanbul to Baghdad in 1853, al-Ālūsī narrates his experiences in a literary style. To date, no detailed study in Türkiye has examined the rhetorical devices employed in al-Ālūsī’s return travelogue, Nashwat al-Mudām fī al-ʿAwd ilā Madīnat al-Salām. For this reason, the present study focuses on the section describing the city of Amasya, composed during the return journey, as a representative sample for literary analysis. The aim of the study is to analyze examples of Arabic rhetoric through al-Ālūsī’s depiction of Amasya—an Ottoman city—and to identify rhetorical devices such as simile (tashbīh), metaphor (istiʿāra), antithesis (ṭibāq), rhymed prose (sajʿ), paronomasia (jinās), and quotation (iqtibās) within his portrayal of the city and its scholarly milieu. Furthermore, the study seeks to shed light on nineteenth-century prose style and literary taste through a single travelogue. The study adapts a qualitative, text-centered analysis. Relevant sentences containing rhetorical devices are translated into Turkish and examined. The conclusion reached in this study is that al-Ālūsī’s portrayal of Amasya contains 101 examples of rhetorical devices, including tashbīh, istiʿāra makniyya, mutarraf sajʿ and mutawāzī sajʿ, jinās tāmm and jinās ghayr tāmm, ṭibāq, as well as quotations drawn from the Qurʾān, proverbs, and poetic verses.
O, 1851 yılında Bağdat’tan İstanbul’a gidişinde ve 1853 yılında İstanbul’dan Bağdat’a dönüşünde kaleme aldığı iki seyahatnâmesinde, yolculuğu boyunca yaşadıklarını edebî bir dille anlatmıştır.
