Abstract
Kastamonu was one of the first regions in Anatolia where the Turkish-Islamic identity took shape. The permanent Turkish settlement that gained momentum during the Seljuk Period became established during the Beyliks and Ottoman eras through the allocation of land to Sufi dervishes. The zawiyas established on these lands along main transportation routes and at strategic points played a significant role in ensuring the security of the region, spreading Turkish-Islamic culture, and providing social order. Based on fieldwork, this research examines the core settlement functions of 25 zawiyas identified in the 15th century and earlier across the district, which today covers the entirety of Devrekâni and Seydiler and a part of Ağlı. This study aims to address the deficiency in the literature regarding the Devrekâni region, which has not been evaluated independently despite its rich presence of lodges and zawiyas.
