Abstract
When it comes to the discipline of history, it may be argued that scholarly work depends less on drawing arbitrary hypothetical inferences than on the researcher’s ability to ask meaningful questions to which answers can actually be found and to work through these questions in a dialectical relationship with the evidence. The fragmentary and polysemous nature of sources often compels historians to fill narrative gaps fictionally. In this context, the central research question of this study is as follows: At what point does the dialectical bond between the question the historian asks and the evidence at hand break, and at what point does this rupture turn scholarly inquiry into speculation? The study aims to examine the tension between the fictional freedom that the historian possesses in historical writing and the epistemological limits imposed by the document, together with the historian’s responsibility toward the document. Conceptual analysis and epistemological analysis, drawn from qualitative research approaches, were employed. Theories of historiography were evaluated in light of, in particular, the perspectives of the social logic of the text and historical criticism. The findings show that a historian’s pursuit of questions that cannot possibly be answered undermines the dialectic of evidence. The study concludes that no datum can acquire the status of “evidence” unless it is related to a specific question, and that the legitimacy of historical fiction is possible only by respecting the epistemological limits of the document and ethical responsibilities. By offering a conceptual framework for the balance between fiction and evidence in historiography, the study aims to contribute to the literature.
