Abstract

This study examines the reign of Ramesses III, regarded as the last powerful pharaoh of Egypt’s New Kingdom, and the palace conspiracy that was directed against him. As one of the foremost rulers of the Twentieth Dynasty, Ramesses III defended his country against external threats through the victories he won in his campaigns against the Sea Peoples and the Libyans; yet the economic and administrative difficulties that deepened towards the end of his reign intensified the power struggles within the palace. At the centre of the study lies the “harem conspiracy” organised by his secondary wife, Tiye, in order to place her son Pentaweret on the throne in place of the designated heir, the future Ramesses IV. In the light of the Judicial Papyrus of Turin, the principal source for these events, the article examines the workings of the conspiracy and the trial and punishment of the accused. It further evaluates the modern radiological and forensic analyses carried out on the pharaoh’s mummy, discussing the evidence that he was killed by a cut to the throat and that the body known as “Unknown Man E” may be that of Pentaweret. By reading the ancient texts alongside current scientific data, the study demonstrates that the assassination was not merely the death of a ruler but a political turning point that hastened the decline of the New Kingdom and laid bare the dynastic conflicts over succession. The research brings together ancient Egyptian sources and modern scholarship through an interdisciplinary approach, treating the subject not simply as a case of assassination but as a window onto the workings of the palace, the order of succession, and the influence of royal women upon power in the late New Kingdom. The economic hardship and administrative disruption that emerged towards the close of Ramesses III’s reign are assessed within the framework of the social and political conditions that nurtured the conspiracy. The study thus seeks both to reconstruct the course of events on the basis of primary sources and, by identifying the points at which the ancient texts converge with the forensic findings, to set out the power struggles behind the assassination from a holistic perspective.

Özet

Bu çalışma, Mısır’ın Yeni Krallık döneminin son güçlü firavunu olarak kabul edilen III. Ramses’in saltanatını ve onu hedef alan saray suikastını incelemektedir. Yirminci hanedanın önde gelen hükümdarlarından biri olan III. Ramses, Deniz Kavimleri ve Libyalılarla yürüttüğü savaşlarda elde ettiği başarılarla ülkeyi dış tehditlere karşı korumuş; ancak saltanatının sonlarında derinleşen ekonomik ve idari sorunlar, saray içindeki iktidar mücadelelerini tırmandırmıştır. Çalışmanın merkezinde, ikincil eşi Tiye’nin, oğlu Pentawere’i veliaht yerine (gelecekteki IV. III. Ramses’in saltanatının sonlarına doğru beliren ekonomik darlık ve idari aksaklıklar, komployu besleyen toplumsal ve siyasal zemin çerçevesinde değerlendirilmektedir. Böylece çalışma, hem olayın tarihsel akışını birincil kaynaklar temelinde yeniden kurmayı hem de antik metinlerle adli bulguların örtüştüğü noktaları ele alarak suikastın ardındaki iktidar mücadelelerini bütüncül bir bakışla ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.
