Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of circular economy practices in the textile sector and present circular business models developed in this context, using examples from both Turkey and the world. Circular economy is a system that builds economic, environmental, and social capital by creating restorative and regenerative techniques and biological cycles, freeing global economic development from the goal of producing using limited resources. This study investigates how the textile sector can be restructured to contribute to sustainability and how innovations can be introduced to the sector through circular economy practices. The study begins by addressing the theoretical foundations of the circular economy in the textile sector. Key concepts such as circular business models, closed-loop production processes, and various reuse strategies are detailed. Subsequently, the study presents various examples of how these practices are being implemented in the textile sector. In this context, the practices of companies operating within the framework of the circular economy, both globally and in Turkey, are examined. The companies’ circular business models are evaluated within the entire framework of stages that ensure the continuation of circulation, starting from the design phase. Additionally, the environmental, economic, and social impacts of these companies’ circular business models are discussed. The examples examined in this study demonstrate that circular economy practices in the textile sector have great potential in terms of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. It has been observed that, through circular business models, waste generation and carbon footprint are reduced, and natural resources are used more efficiently. Circular business models possess the ability to create innovative business opportunities for firms. From a social perspective, circular economy practices contribute to increased employment, improved working conditions, heightened social awareness, and positive changes in consumer behavior. Specifically, the implementation of circular business models in the textile sector has made the widespread adoption of sustainable production and consumption habits possible. Investments made by companies in line with their sustainability policies have provided significant positive returns both environmentally and economically. Furthermore, this study offers predictions on the critical importance of the widespread adoption of circular economy practices in achieving the sector’s future sustainability goals.
