Abstract

Climate change introduces new risks and uncertainties for geotechnical engineering, as it does for all engineering disciplines. Increased temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, droughts and sudden rainfalls, and increased frequency of freeze-thaw cycles directly affect the physical and mechanical properties of soils. This suggests that fundamental geotechnical problems such as bearing capacity, settlement and liquefaction may become more complex in the future. This study evaluates the potential impacts of climate change on geotechnical engineering within a conceptual framework. International literature was reviewed, and existing findings were categorized under three main themes: the effects of climate change on soil properties, its implications for geotechnical engineering practices, and its potential implications for infrastructure safety and risk management. The lack of a study directly focusing on this topic in the Turkish literature reveals that the field has not yet been explored in the Turkish context. The most significant contribution of the study is the proposal of a conceptual model explaining the relationship between climate change and geotechnical engineering. This model reveals the effects of climatic variables on soil behavior and the safety of engineering structures through a cause-effect relationship and provides a guiding framework for future experimental and applied research.
