Abstract
This study examines how the themes of power, hegemony, colonialism, gender, and cultural identity are constructed and legitimized through discursive strategies in the film Dune: Part One (2021). A qualitative research design was adopted, and Teun A. van Dijk’s socio-cognitive critical discourse analysis approach was employed. The dataset consists of scenes and dialogues reflecting themes of power, hegemony, colonialism, religion/tradition, gender, and cultural identity. The film was viewed multiple times, and scenes selected through purposive sampling were analyzed at both macro and micro levels. At the macro level, themes, plot structure, and contextual elements were examined, while at the micro level, word and sentence structures, emphases, repetitions, and implicit discourses were analyzed. The findings reveal that Arrakis is constructed as the center of resource-based colonial relations and that economic and political domination is legitimized through the production and control of spice. The analysis identifies prominent discourses of colonialism, native–outsider opposition, messianism, and ideological control. The Bene Gesserit order is represented as a hegemonic mechanism that exercises power through knowledge, belief, and prophetic narratives, whereas the Fremen symbolize indigenous resistance and anti-colonial struggle. The findings further indicate that gender roles are reproduced within a hierarchical social structure and that the “chosen one” narrative functions as a discursive tool for legitimizing power. Consequently, the film can be interpreted not merely as a science fiction narrative but as a discursive text that critically reflects contemporary social inequalities, power relations, and ideological structures.
Özet
Bu çalışma, Dune: Çöl Gezegeni (2021) filminde iktidar, hegemonya, sömürgecilik, toplumsal cinsiyet ve kültürel kimlik temalarının hangi söylemsel stratejiler aracılığıyla üretildiğini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma, “Filmde güç ilişkileri ve toplumsal eşitsizlikler hangi söylemler üzerinden meşrulaştırılmakta ve yeniden üretilmektedir?” sorusuna odaklanmaktadır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemi benimsenmiş ve Teun A. van Dijk’ın sosyo-bilişsel eleştirel söylem analizi yaklaşımı kullanılmıştır.
