Abstract

This study critically examines how, contrary to the vision of democratic pluralism promised by social media platforms, the leadership images of presidential candidates in the Turkish context exhibit a tendency towards structural homogenization at the visual and discursive levels. The research analyzes 94 campaign posts from the social media accounts of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (People's Alliance candidate) and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu (Nation's Alliance candidate) during the 2023 Presidential Election campaign period, which involved interaction with the public. The dataset was created from Instagram, X/Twitter, and Facebook platforms, with 47 posts each for each candidate. The data was evaluated in accordance with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis and Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach. The findings show a significant convergence in the visual and discursive representations of the candidates despite their different ideological positions. At the visual level, the appearance of the candidate without a jacket or with rolled-up sleeves was seen in 78.7% of cases, while PR teams were seen out of frame or blurred in 86.2% of cases. At the discursive level, cultural and moral indicators account for 85.1%, while inclusive/vertical populist discourse is at 83.0%. In contrast, macro policy/programmatic emphasis remains at 17.0%. The findings, limited to the public engagement-themed campaign posts examined, indicate that candidates with different political positions have developed similar visual codes, common discursive strategies, and standardized digital leadership performances. The study discusses this convergence within the context of the algorithmic visibility logic of social media platforms and the impact of platform capitalism on political communication, arguing that digital political representation is increasingly shaped around image, emotional proximity, and symbolic performance.
