Abstract
This study aims to examine the strategies of the Sri Lankan Muslim community, as a minority group, for preserving and intergenerationally transmitting their religious identity, specifically focusing on the processes of training religious officials through the case of the Naleemiah Institute of Islamic Studies. Positioned within the research tradition of the sociology of religion, which analyzes religious institutions within the framework of their institutional structures, educational practices, and social functions, this study employs a descriptive-interpretive single-case study design based on a qualitative research approach. The data were obtained through direct observation based on interviews conducted with a lecturer and a student during the researcher's field visit to the institute in 2023, as well as indirect observation via document analysis based on the institute's official publications and academic literature. The study findings reveal that the Naleemiah Institute of Islamic Studies, established in Beruwala in 1973, has developed a "double-winged" curriculum model that integrates the South Asian-originated Dars-i Nizami tradition with modern social sciences, language education, and information technologies. Graduates who complete the seven-year integrated education process undertake not only classical duties such as serving as imams and preachers in mosques, but also active roles in fields such as education, public administration, social services, and social peacebuilding. This study is significant as it demonstrates that the identity preservation strategies of minority Muslim communities through religious education can be reconstructed to respond to the demands of the modern world without abandoning traditional frameworks of reference.
