Abstract
This review evaluates the production status, ecological adaptation, cultivation constraints, development strategies, and scientific studies related to grain legumes (chickpea, common bean, lentil, pea, faba bean, and cowpea) in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye during the period 2020–2024. Relevant publications indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and TR Dizin databases were examined. Among the provinces of the region, Bitlis plays a leading role in common bean production, whereas Erzurum, Muş, and Van demonstrate considerable potential for chickpea cultivation owing to their favorable adaptation to cool climatic conditions and high yield capacity. Anthracnose disease and seed beetles are among the major biotic constraints limiting production, while snow mold and extremely low temperatures represent the most important abiotic stress factors, particularly for winter sowing. Trend analyses of regional production data indicate that fluctuations in yield are closely associated with the continued use of traditional farming practices. The widespread adoption of cultivars suitable for mechanized harvesting, increased use of certified seed, and integration of the region’s low-input production systems into organic farming models are considered strategic priorities for the sustainable development of grain legume cultivation. Furthermore, this study proposes a conceptual “Organic Grain Legume Production Basin” model aimed at utilizing extensive fallow lands more effectively, thereby contributing both to the regional economy and to meeting the demand for protein-rich feed in livestock production.
