Abstract
Gender perceptions that begin within the family may be reinforced or altered during the school years. The social studies curriculum—an interdisciplinary educational program—and the textbooks written in accordance with it play a significant role in students’ socialisation and the shaping of their gender perceptions. The aim of this study is to determine how male and female gender roles are represented in the texts and visuals of fifth-grade social studies textbooks in Iran and Turkey within the social and family contexts. Using document analysis as part of a qualitative research methodology, this study examined the gender representations in family and social life found in the texts and visuals of the textbooks through content analysis. When comparing the textbooks of the two countries, it was found that the representation of the female gender in visuals is greater in the Turkish social studies textbook than in the Iranian social studies textbook. The representation of the male gender in the texts of the Iranian social studies textbook is higher than in the Turkish social studies textbook. In the Iranian social studies textbook, the representation of gender roles in the family—such as mother, father, spouse, and child—within the context of shared responsibilities was found to be higher in the visuals than in the Turkish social studies textbook. It was found that the combined representation of gender roles within the family context in the texts of the Turkish social studies textbook was higher than in the Iranian social studies textbook. The findings of the study revealed that the Turkish social studies textbook presented a balanced representation of gender roles, whereas the Iranian social studies textbook presented an unbalanced representation that rendered women less visible than men. Suggestions have been made in light of with these results.
