Abstract
This study analyses community interpreting practices in Türkiye within the contexts of disaster response and forced migration from a sociological perspective. Drawing on the sociological turn in translation studies, Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, field, capital, and symbolic violence constitute the study's primary analytical axis. Within this structural framework, the boundaries of interpreter agency are examined through Margaret Archer's theory of reflexivity, Luc Boltanski's sociology of justification, and Zygmunt Bauman's liquid modernity. Rather than conducting new fieldwork, the study synthesises previously gathered empirical findings from asylum offices, hospitals, courts, migration and disaster settings, alongside academic publications and current migration statistics, within a coherent theoretical framework. As a primary case study, the historical development of the Interpreter-in-Aid at Disasters initiative (ARÇ), established under a civil society umbrella following the 1999 earthquake, and its critical operational practice during the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes are examined. The findings demonstrate that community interpreters are not merely subservient voice conduits caught between the state's security apparatus and the vulnerability of migrants; rather, they function as active social subjects who negotiate structural constraints through internal dialogue and situated justification practices. The study further establishes that crisis interpreting constitutes an indispensable public capacity in Türkiye's multilingual and multicultural society — one that directly contributes to the resilience of Turkish culture and society in the face of crises. Accordingly, the study argues that community interpreting in Türkiye must be systematically repositioned — at academic, institutional, and civil society levels — as a strategic component for strengthening disaster resilience.
