Abstract

This study investigates how the English discourse produced by foreign football managers during press conferences is transformed through oral interpreting into Turkish, focusing on linguistic, cultural, and discursive dimensions. Although sports press conferences constitute highly visible media events, interpreting practices in these contexts have received limited attention in translation and interpreting studies. By combining insights from interpreting studies with research on stance and evaluative language, this study aims to contribute to the growing body of discourse-oriented translation research within the context of sports communication. The research adopts a qualitative design. The dataset consists of three video recordings of press conferences delivered by foreign football managers working in Türkiye, in which their English statements were interpreted into Turkish. The videos were selected from publicly accessible YouTube content published by official club channels and national sports media outlets. The source and target discourses were transcribed in detail and analyzed through discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis, focusing on linguistic transformations, cultural adaptations, and discursive restructuring in the interpreting process. The findings indicate that interpreters frequently transform fragmented and spontaneous English speech into more fluent and structured Turkish discourse. Strategies such as smoothing, explicitation, restructuring, and terminological localization are widely employed in the interpreting process. In addition, interpreters tend to soften criticism, collectivize responsibility, and culturally reframe certain expressions in accordance with the norms of Turkish sports media discourse. At the discursive level, the core stance elements of the managers—such as leadership, responsibility, and team identity—are largely preserved in the interpreted discourse. However, some epistemic markers of uncertainty are occasionally reduced, resulting in a more assertive and definitive stance in Turkish. Overall, the study demonstrates that interpreting in sports press conferences is not merely a process of semantic transfer but also involves discursive restructuring shaped by cultural expectations and institutional constraints.
