Abstract

In this study, the effects of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae Filipjev, 1934 (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) on the larval and pupal stages of the pine sawfly Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy, 1785) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) were investigated under both laboratory and field conditions. A commercial formulation, Nematac (Bioglobal®), was applied at four different concentrations [75, 125, 250, and 500 million infective juveniles (IJs) per 100 L of water]. The larvae used in the experiments were collected from Pinus brutia forests located in the Dinar district of Afyonkarahisar Province, Türkiye. Larval assays were conducted under both laboratory and field conditions, whereas pupal assays were performed only under laboratory conditions. According to the results of the two-way analysis of variance, both biological stage and dose had statistically significant effects on mortality. Higher doses (250 and 500 million IJs) resulted in significantly greater mortality compared to the control and lower doses. While direct mortality was observed during the larval stage, the pest’s life cycle was disrupted at the pupal stage through the suppression of adult emergence. A clear dose–response relationship was observed under laboratory conditions, whereas mortality rates were lower under field conditions due to environmental factors. Overall, the findings demonstrate that S. feltiae exerts a multi-stage effect on N. sertifer and can significantly limit its population dynamics by affecting both larval and pupal stages.
