Abstract

Aim: This study compared the results of fresh and frozen embryo transfer (thaw) cycles in in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments performed before the pandemic (2019, n=1118) and during the pandemic (2020, n=1120) to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Materials and Methods: Data from patients who underwent IVF/ICSI treatment at Gaziantep Gazi Novafertil IVF Center between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020, were retrospectively reviewed. Patient age, number of previous cycles, number of oocytes retrieved, transfer day, and clinical pregnancy rates were compared. Independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and chi-square test were used for statistical analysis. Findings: In the fresh cycle, the mean age of patients treated in 2019 (n=750) was found to be higher than treated in 2020 (n=617, p=0.021). The number of attempts was also significantly higher in 2019 (p=0.002). However, no significant difference was observed in clinical pregnancy rates (p=0.094). In thaw cycles, no significant differences were found between groups treated in 2019 (n=368) and 2020 (n=496) in terms of patient age (p=0.834), number of attempts (p=0.063), transfer day (p=0.453), and pregnancy rates (p=0.272). Conclusion: Although the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in patient profiles and transfer strategies in fresh embryo transfer cycles, it did not affect pregnancy success rates.
