Abstract

In the digital age, the widespread adoption of mobile technologies has fundamentally transformed individuals' media consumption practices, leading to a shift in viewing experiences towards a more speed-based and short-attention-focused structure. In this environment defined by the attention economy, the traditional narrative structure of drama has begun to transform into micro-drama narratives, featuring shorter, more intense dramatic expressions. A common example of these micro-drama narratives, emerging as a new dramatic narrative model, is vertical series filmed in a format suitable for mobile screens. A review of the literature on these vertical series, a specific form of micro-drama narrative, reveals limited information. The nature of the audiovisual elements in these productions and their differences from traditional drama examples present a research problem awaiting clarification. To address this problem, this study employs a qualitative research process to detail the elements that differentiate vertical series from traditional drama narratives. Firstly, the vertical series "Zirvede" (2024), filmed in Turkey, was included in the sample group of the research, and its episodes were analyzed in detail according to the "shot-by-shot" analysis approach described by Ryan and Lenos. When the research findings are evaluated in general, it has been revealed that vertical series produce cinematographic solutions based on the structure of mobile screens and user experience. In this regard, it was found that close-ups focusing on the gestures and facial expressions of the characters were frequently preferred in the shadow of the rapidly and instantaneously developing narratives; natural light and lighting were used functionally in the spaces; and the visual and auditory elements in the scene were effectively produced with micro-dramatic intensity through dynamic editing methods.
