Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to assess individuals' motivation to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyle behaviors. Considering the negative health impacts associated with modern living conditions, understanding individuals’ motivation toward healthy living practices is of critical importance. In the first phase of the study, qualitative interviews were conducted, resulting in an initial item pool of 50 statements. Expert evaluations were obtained to ensure content validity, and based on content validity ratios, the item pool was reduced to 43 items. The construct validity of the scale was examined using both Exploratory Factor Analysis EFA and CFA. These analyses revealed a four-factor structure: "Psychological Well-being," "Environmental Compatibility," "Social Interaction," and "Health Concern." CFA results indicated that this four-factor model showed an acceptable level of model fit (χ²/df = 2,007, RMSEA = 0,061, CFI = 0,937). The internal consistency of the scale was found to be high (Cronbach’s α = 0,871), and its stability over time was confirmed through test-retest reliability (r = 0,830). Positive and significant correlations were found between the HLMS and both the HLAS and the LSS. However, no significant relationship was observed with the PHS. In conclusion, the HLMS is a valid and reliable instrument that can be utilized in the fields of health psychology and public health to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors. It is expected to serve as a functional tool in assessing individual motivation levels and in developing effective health intervention programs.
