Abstract

Contemporary conservation approaches to cultural heritage structures aim not only to preserve physical integrity but also to sustain their meaning and functionality in social life through new uses. This study examines the effects of spatial interventions and exhibition strategies implemented during the adaptive reuse process on heritage conservation and spatial meaning production, through the case of the Gümüşhane Museum, where two historic twin mansions were restored and converted into a museum. Within the scope of a qualitative case study, on-site observation, photographic documentation, floor plan readings, and analysis of the exhibition narrative were evaluated together. The findings indicate that the original residential plan scheme has largely been preserved; however, requirements related to accessibility, security, and visitor guidance necessitated limited yet decisive interventions in the circulation layout. The thematic distribution of exhibitions across floors organizes chronological and cultural layers into an upward narrative sequence, strengthening the space’s capacity for public representation and collective memory production. Nevertheless, it was observed that certain exhibition elements establish a weak relationship with the architectural space, and traces of the residential memory occasionally remain in the background. By demonstrating how the circulation–narrative–space relationship is reconfigured in the adaptation of a twin-house typology into a museum, the study contributes to the literature and opens a discussion on the spatial dimensions of publicness and collective memory production in a peripheral museum context.

Özet

Kültürel miras yapılarına yönelik güncel koruma yaklaşımları, yalnızca fiziksel bütünlüğün muhafazasını değil; aynı zamanda bu yapıların yeni işlevler aracılığıyla toplumsal yaşamdaki anlamlarının ve işlevselliklerinin sürekliliğini sağlamayı hedeflemektedir. Bu çalışma, Gümüşhane’de ikiz konak tipolojisindeki iki tarihî konutun restorasyonla müze işlevi kazandığı Gümüşhane Müzesi örneği üzerinden, yeniden işlevlendirme sürecinde gerçekleştirilen mekânsal düzenlemeler ile sergileme stratejilerinin kültürel mirasın korunması ve mekânsal anlam üretimi üzerindeki etkilerini incelemektedir. Nitel durum çalışması kapsamında yerinde gözlem, fotoğraflama, kat planı okumaları ve sergi anlatısının çözümlenmesi birlikte değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular, özgün konut plan şemasının büyük ölçüde korunduğunu; ancak erişilebilirlik, güvenlik ve yönlendirme gereksinimlerinin dolaşım kurgusunda sınırlı müdahaleleri zorunlu kıldığını göstermektedir. Katlara dağıtılan tematik sergileme düzeninin, kronolojik ve kültürel katmanları yukarı yönlü bir anlatı içinde örgütleyerek mekânın kamusallaşma ve temsil kapasitesini güçlendirdiği belirlenmiştir. Buna karşın bazı sergileme elemanlarının mimari mekânla kurduğu ilişkinin zayıf kaldığı ve konut belleğine dair izlerin yer yer arka planda kaldığı görülmüştür. Çalışma, ikiz planlı konut tipolojisinin müze işlevine uyarlanmasında dolaşım–anlatı–mekân ilişkisinin nasıl yeniden kurulduğunu somut bir örnek üzerinden görünür kılarak literatüre katkı sunmakta; ayrıca periferide konumlanan bir müzede kamusallaşma ve kolektif hafıza üretiminin mekânsal karşılıklarını tartışmaya açmaktadır.
