Abstract
In this study, drilling operations were carried out on titanium and titanium matrix boron carbide (B4C) reinforced materials produced by the powder metallurgy method. The study investigated the effects of cutting parameters on thrust force and surface roughness using three different carbide drills. In the experiments, 5 mm diameter carbide drills were used at a cutting speed of 20-30 m/min and a feed rate of 0.05 mm/rev. The study observed that the feed force and moment values decreased as a result of B4C reinforcement. The decrease in the friction coefficient in the carbide drills also decreased the thrust force and moment values. The lowest thrust force value was measured as 208 N at a cutting speed of 30 m/min in the reinforced sample drilled with an AlTiN-coated carbide drill. Surface roughness values decreased with increasing cutting speed. It was determined that the B4C reinforcement improved the hole surface quality.
