Abstract
Historical buildings are considered one of the most valuable elements of a country's cultural heritage. The primary objective in the conservation of historical buildings is to ensure that they are passed on to future generations in a healthy manner without compromising their structural integrity and authenticity. In this context, the accurate identification of the compositions of original building materials such as mortar is of great importance in the conservation of historical buildings. In conservation and restoration work, it is essential that the restoration mortars used exhibit similar properties to the original mortars in terms of both material compatibility and the success of the interventions. In this study, content analyses of the building materials used in the structures uncovered during excavation work at the ancient city of Savatra in the Yağlıbayat neighbourhood of Konya province in Turkey's Central Anatolia region are being conducted. Within the scope of the study, various mortar samples were taken from the stage building of the theatre building located in the ancient city of Savatra. The mortar samples were prepared in the laboratory under appropriate conditions for various characterisation studies. XRF, XRD, FTIR, FESEM and grain size analyses were performed for the characterisation of the wall mortar samples. The results of the study revealed that the main components of the wall mortar samples were calcite (CaCO3) and quartz (SiO2). The findings are significant in determining the composition of construction materials used in the past and in establishing the appropriate material composition and formulation for the restoration of archaeological structures.
