Abstract

Drought is one of the major meteorological hazards that causes significant impacts on water resources, agricultural production, and ecosystems. In this study, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) method was used to assess seasonal drought variability in the Susurluk Basin. Within the scope of the study, long-term monthly precipitation data obtained from eight meteorological stations located within the basin boundaries were used. Precipitation series were evaluated separately for spring, summer, autumn, and winter seasons, and seasonal SPI time series were generated for each station. The obtained results were presented graphically based on the provinces where the stations are located, and the temporal and spatial drought behavior across the basin was investigated. The findings indicated that the “near normal” class was dominant at all stations; however, severe and extreme drought events recurred during certain periods. In particular, the years 1985–1989, 2003, 2007, 2014, and 2022 stood out as simultaneous drought periods at many stations. It was also determined that drought variability was higher in summer and winter seasons compared to the other seasons.
