Abstract
This study addresses the “minimalism” movement, which meets the modern individual’s demand for simplification, and “zühd” (asceticism), one of the fundamental principles of Islamic Sufism (Tasavvuf). Going beyond the formal similarities of “simplification” and “reduction” inherent in both lifestyles, the study examines and evaluates the relationship between human beings, matter, and God through the frameworks of zühd and minimalism. The research encompasses the definitions and practices of zühd in classical sufi sources alongside the minimalist life philosophy of the modern West and popular culture. By dedicating sufficient space to the historical process, the study compares the ontological and teleological aspects of zühd and minimalism through the conceptions of human beings, objects, and God in traditional and modern thought. The mutual evaluation of these two approaches—which belong to two different eras and emerged in entirely distinct geographies—is crucial for interpreting humanity’s relationship with matter from a broad perspective. It discusses which layers of the human soul these two perspectives, both of which object to excess in consumption and advocate for simplicity, appeal to and which existential needs they address. The main purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the concept of zühd in Islamic thought and the minimalism movement in modern thought, thereby examining the essential differences between the two lifestyles in terms of their purposes, processes, and outcomes. In line with this objective, the “comparative analysis” method, a qualitative research design, was employed. The data obtained by reviewing classical sufi texts and modern minimalism literature were classified and interpreted accordingly. In this context, an examination of the thought systems underlying both concepts reveals the following fundamental differences: Zühd, representing traditional Islamic thought, is based on a theocentric worldview where Allah, the Creator of all things, is at the center. Minimalism, representing the modern thought of the West, is based on an anthropocentric, secular, and humanist understanding that views human beings as the foundation of everything. Furthermore, in the understanding of zühd, worldly possessions are temporary trusts and are seen sometimes as a means for gratitude (shukr) and sometimes as a test. In minimalism, however, objects are evaluated as a burden that restricts human freedom, initially serving pleasure and comfort but eventually dominating the individual over time. From a teleological perspective, the goal of a minimalist life is the comfort and liberation of the self. Modern individuals opt for voluntary simplicity to escape the stress caused by excessive consumption, live a calmer life, and increase their sense of freedom by reducing their preoccupation with possessions. In minimalism, the individual is centralized rather than a transcendent purpose. In contrast, the ultimate goal of zühd is solely to know Allah, earn His pleasure, and establish closeness to Him. The ascetic (zâhid) aims to discipline the ego (nafs) by purifying the heart from everything other than God (mâsivâ); zühd is not an end in itself, but a necessary means on the path to reaching the Truth. It is a spiritual process that must be supported by inner states such as reliance on God (tawakkul), contentment (qana’ah), spiritual poverty (faqr), piety (taqwa), scrupulousness (wara’), diligence, and generosity. In conclusion, minimalism, as a product of modern thought, remains within the secular world and offers a “horizontal simplification” centered on the individual’s psychological well-being. By viewing possessions as a burden and discarding them, it provides worldly comfort, secular tranquility, and focus. Sufi zühd, on the other hand, is a “vertical simplification” aimed at transcending the world and becoming a better servant of God. On the path of zühd, worldly possessions are seen as a veil and a test to be overcome, thus becoming a means for otherworldly salvation. At the end of this journey, the zâhid aims to reach paradise, divine love, and ultimately, by shedding the mortal self, the station of annihilation in God (fanâ fi-Allah) and the ideal of becoming the perfect human (insân-ı kâmil). Although both behaviors essentially exhibit a stance against the domination of matter, minimalism represents an existential route aimed at returning humans to themselves, whereas zühd represents a fundamentally distinct route aimed at returning humans to their Creator.
