Abstract
This study focuses on the problematic of whether the accusations of Magianism, frequently resorted to in classical period kalām polemics, functioned as a tool of marginalization and exclusion shaped around sectarian bigotry rather than being a purely theological critique. From the perspective of the discipline of kalām, which developed as an activity of seeking the truth within the tradition of İslâmic thought, the grounding and debating of the tenets of faith on a rational basis is of vital importance. However, sectarian bigotry constitutes a serious epistemological obstacle in the process of reaching knowledge and grasping the truth. In this context, the primary objective of this study is to comprehensively identify the subjects in which accusations of Magianism—which can be described as a deviation from the pursuit of truth in the science of kalām—arise, to examine the underlying grounds of these accusations, and to analyze their function in the construction of sectarian identity. In the research, the document analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods, has been adopted; the extant founding texts of kalām schools and the fundamental sources in classical literature have been taken as primary data. As a result of the examinations, it has been determined that the accusation of Magianism emerged most intensely in the context of debates on destiny (qadar) and free will. However, the findings of the research show that the aforementioned accusations were not limited to this field alone; they were also utilized in many problems of kalām such as tawhīd (oneness of God), divine attributes, khalq al-Qur’ān (the creation of the Qur’an), theories of creation, al-ma’dūm (the non-existent), and al-aslah (the most salutary). It has been observed that the narration attributed to the Prophet, formulated as "The Qadariyya are the Magians of this Ummah," had a central influence on the schools' association of the opposing side with Magianism while defending their own approaches. These designations, constructed through such narrations which are considered problematic in terms of textual and chain-of-transmission (matn and isnad) criticism, functioned as characterizations that reinforced the legitimacy of all parties to the debate while discrediting the opponent's view. In this direction, it has been identified that the Jabriyya and Ahl al-Sunnah called the Mu’tazilah, and the Mu’tazilah called all sects defending that man is not the creator of his own actions, as Qadariyya and consequently "Magian." It has been determined that a similar exclusionary attitude occurred in the debates on attributes and khalq al-Qur’ān, and that the accusations were used not unilaterally but as a mutual polemical strategy. While the Mu’tazilah likened those who saw the attributes as eternal beings outside of the Essence to Magianism through the concept of the "multiplicity of eternals, opposing schools linked the views of the Mu’tazilah with dualistic understandings that accept change in God. However, another critical finding obtained in the research is that the portrayals of Magianism in kalām polemics do not fully overlap with historical and doctrinal Magianism. Magianism is an ancient teaching that was primarily monotheistic but turned into a dualistic structure over time and underwent significant doctrinal changes and transformations. Mutakallimūn (theologians) generally focused only on the dualistic conception of God in the form of "light as the actor of good" and "darkness as the actor of evil"; however, it has been observed that none of the sects subject to the accusation had a direct doctrinal similarity with this teaching. The effort of theologians to justify their own conceptions of God and the cosmos, as well as the method of dialectic (jadal) used in the discussions, played a significant role in directing such accusations at the opposing party. For this reason, accusations of Magianism ceased to be a unit of theological analysis and became an epistemological barrier aimed at preventing the legitimacy of the opponent's speech. This situation, instead of enriching theological debates, caused the rational ground for dialogue to weaken by the parties declaring each other "outside the religion". It is thought that the aforementioned awareness will offer significant gains to today's theological discussions in order to maintain a rational and constructive line instead of biased tendencies in handling the issues.
